RIP, IBEW Local 103 Brother Rick Varney, after a full life

BEVERLY, Mass. - Richard W. "Rick" Varney, 72, husband of the late Joan "Jo-Ann" (Coletti) Varney, died Friday morning May 27, 2005, at the Beverly Hospital emergency department.

Born in Beverly, son of the late Harold and Ethel (Spry) Varney, he was a graduate of Swampscott High School in the class of 1951. He continued his education at Wentworth Technical Institute. Mr. Varney served his country during the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy.

Mr. Varney had worked as a licensed electrician on the North Shore of Boston for 40 years. He also served as the electrical inspector for the city of Beverly. He was a member of the IBEW Local Union 103. Mr. Varney was active in his community, serving on the Beverly Civil Defense, and was a member of the American Legion, and the Vittori-Rocci Post #56. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends but most especially being with his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling and being with his friend, Sheila Parker.

Surviving him are three children, Richard W. Varney, Jr. of Elkton, Md.; Paul F. Varney and his wife Anne Marie of Hampton, N.H.; Jeanne E. DePiero and her husband Brian of Hamilton; one brother, Bill Varney and his wife Suzanne of Fairhope, Al.; his sister-in-law, Ginny Williams and her husband and Bud of Marblehead; six grandchildren, Benjamin, Matthew and Timothy Varney, Matthew, Meghan, and Morgan DePiero; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Bob (Fred) Varney and his wife Jean.

VARNEY - Richard W. "Rick" Varney, 72, husband of the late Joan "Lo-Ann" (Coletti) Varney, died Friday, May 27, 2005, in Beverly, Mass. A funeral service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Ocean Street, Beverly, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Swampscott Cemetery.
