Business news in brief from around New Jersey
Associated Press
MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Negotiators representing Jersey Central Power & Light Co.'s 1,200 unionized workers are returning to the bargaining table after union members rejected a tentative contract.
Negotiations between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and JCP&L's parent company, FirstEnergy Corp., produced an agreement for a three-year contract. But union members voted down the proposal last Thursday.
"We plan to go right back to the negotiating table and work with the union to try to come to an agreement that the company can live with as well as one the work force can accept as well," First Energy spokesman Scott Surgeoner told the Asbury Park Press.
The rejected settlement included a 3 percent pay raise each year, but increased health care costs.
The present contract expires Oct. 31.
JCP&L has 1 million residential and business customers in a 3,200-square-mile territory in northern and central New Jersey.
