Northern California's electrical unions have launched a historic agreement, a union official said.

Bruce Gourley of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers said three union jurisdictions hammered out guidelines covering most residential work in Northern California. The agreement smoothes out long-standing problems in moving union workers to jobs between locals' coverage areas, he said.

As of Jan. 1, IBEW Locals 180 (Napa/Solano), 340 (Sacramento), and 551 (Santa Rosa) combined for the purpose, mostly, of building tract homes.

Gourley said the agreement may be the first of its kind, standardizing electrical union working rules in 26 Northern California counties.
