Electrical workers, PPL reach accord

COLSTRIP (AP) - Electrical workers have reached a four-year labor agreement with PPL Montana that includes a nearly 12 percent increase, the company announced Tuesday.

The 240 workers are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1638.

The contract calls for a 4 percent wage increase the first year and 2.5 percent increases each of the remaining three years, a total of 11-1/2 percent.

It also contains some work rule changes and medical benefit cost-sharing by employees, the company said.

Colstrip plant manager Pete Simonich said the wage increase recognizes the contributions of employees while concessions approved by the union "will allow us to continue to produce competitively priced electricity."

The IBEW's contract expired April 30. Negotiations began Feb. 18.

PPL Montana, a subsidiary of PPL Corp., has offices in Billings, Butte and Helena. It owns 50 percent of Colstrip Units 1 and 2 and 30 percent of Colstrip Unit 3, which it operates for the other five owners.

PPL Montana also operates the Corette coal-fired power plant in Billings and 11 hydroelectric facilities along the Missouri, Flathead, Clark Fork and Madison rivers and Rosebud Creek.

The IBEW contract covers about half of PPL's employees in Montana.
