PASCAGOULA - Chico McGill, long-time business manager of the IBEW, is leaving at the end of the month to take a new job with the union in Washington.

McGill, known as a tough negotiator for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 733, will be director of the government employees department of IBEW beginning March 1.

McGill is a colorful figure who favors jeans over business suits. His full beard and ponytail became near trademarks. But he was willing to cut off the ponytail for his new position.

He said he got a call a couple of weeks ago from Edwin Hill, president of the inernational, asking him to come to Washington to interview for a job. The interview took 15 minutes.

"I was offered the job then and there," said McGill.
